Quicksand 09/30/2008

Well I heard about someone who died in quicksand, and I was wondering how dirt could ever kill someone. So I looked up the definition of sand on Wikipedia:
"A naturally occurring granular material composed of finely divided rock and mineral particles"
Omg sounds so deadly! But apparently quicksand is some sort of "special" sand, I guess its supposed to be faster than normal sand or something. Hmmm, what is the mystery behind this extraordinary sand.  So in the spirit of having nothing better to do I decided to test this glorified mud for myself with a little experiment.

Well, it just so happens that quicksand is pretty hard to find so I made a sample myself by adding 1 part 'quick' to 1 part sand.

The resulting mixture appeared neither impressive nor dangerous. However, it did prove to be excellent for removing those tough stains on pots and pans.
Well I continued my investigations anyway.

First, to prove is quicksand is really more deadly than normal sand:
I first proceeded to rub a small amount of my quixsand onto my body. Not only did it not burn my flesh off but it also proved to be less abrasive to the skin than regular sand. Plus it left my hands clean and lemony fresh
I then ingested a small amount of quicksand. I took the fact that I am still alive to indicate that quicksand is non-lethal.
(Don't try this at home kids)
Conclusion: Quicksand - non lethal. This came as good news because I was starting to believe that all that sand in iraq was Saddam's actual WMD.

Secondly, to see if one can really drown in quicksand. I only had enough quicksand to experiment on a scale model so I completely submerged my superman action figure into my quixsand sample.
3 hours later he was examined and there appeared to be nothing wrong; he seemed to be in the same condition as when I put him in so I just assumed that he didn't die and so the incident wasn't completely fatal
I took this to mean that one cannot drown in quicksand(well if you're kryptonian or made of plastic)

Finally, to prove if quicksand really is quicker i.e.faster than normal sand. So I set up an experiment to test this:

Using the results obtained, and after a bit of difficult calculations I eventually concluded that both types of sand move at the same speed - 0 m/s

Well after my experiments, I have concluded that, aside from superior cleaning ability, quicksand is neither faster nor deadlier than normal sand.
